The main diet is: Top quality fresh raw beef and a little bit of chicken mince. Life Wise Turkey and vegetable for puppies small bites, these are a good size kibble for the small dogs. I do not bother with the grain free foods (dont like them) My babies love boiled eggs given about every 3rd day.
Please be very careful with pigs ears and some of the larger treats Chinese Crested can choke on them.
My cc’s are excellent “doers” and just love food! So be careful about giving bones etc, never give such treats on an empty tummy they will scoff their food. I find the smacko size treats are ok for them.
The appropriate amount of food to be fed depends on metabolism and environment. My furr and furless kids are accustomed to (Graze Feeding) Kibble available at all times. I have found my dogs know when they have had enough and maintain a perfect weight this way. This of course is your choice.
As tempting as it may be to over feed your dog, numerous health risks could impact the health of your dog’s adult life. The idea is to minimise the risk of weight-related health problems (blood pressure and blood sugar level) just to name a couple.
Feeding dogs the wrong foods can trigger diarrhoea or other gastrointestinal disorders. Not to mention, most table scraps are nutritionally deficient to give as a main meal. For that special treat I think it is fine if only small amount.
Always replenish your dog’s water bowl with fresh, clean water. Just remember when you first get your new Crested, he/she may not be overly interested in eating straight away as there is a lot of adjustments happening.
IMPORTANT What ever you do, don’t go offering too many special treats other wise you just may have a finicky eater on your hands, you really don’t want that. Your new cc will soon settle and get used to a new environment and routine. Routine is very important.
Dog health tip: Starting a nutritional foundation for your dog will pay off as they age. A super shiny coat, alert eyes, a happy demeanour accompanied an energetic movement are the signs of a healthy canine.
All the very best with with your new addition, I always look forward to hearing how my babies settle in and fit in to your lifestyle. Please feel free to call me anytime if you have any questions at all.
